The Viru-Nigula council supported the sale of the Madala property to Fermi Energia
At its meeting on March 20th, the Viru-Nigula Rural Municipality Council decided by 15 votes in favour and one abstention to alienate the municipality's 95-hectare Madala property to Fermi Energia AS. The decision lays the groundwork for the construction of a potential 600 MW nuclear power plant in Kunda, should Madala be confirmed as the official location during the state's special spatial planning process. In the coming weeks, the political decision will be formalised into a notarial obligation agreement. According to the agreement, Fermi Energia will pay an annual reservation fee of €20,000–€50,000 for the property during the state's special spatial planning process. If the Estonian Government confirms Madala as the official site for the nuclear power plant – expected around 2029 – Fermi Energia will gain the exclusive right to acquire the property based on the market value determined by independent appraisers. The increase in value resulting from the spatial plan will not be taken into account when determining the price, with the costs borne by Fermi Energia.
