30 young people learn the basics of nuclear energy in Lammasmäki

At the invitation of Fermi Energia, a group of experts from various fields of nuclear energy and 30 young nuclear enthusiasts gathered last week in Lammasmäki near Kunda for a three-day summer school to learn more about this exciting and complex field.

"For the second year running, the summer school on modern nuclear energy will be called 'Fermion' - the elementary building blocks of our world, named after Enrico Fermi. The basic knowledge of nuclear energy is also a building block for all future students of related disciplines, be it physics, energy, radiation safety, medicine, environmental protection or any other field," explained Marti Jeltsov, PhD in Nuclear Energy, one of the organisers of the summer school and head of technology at Fermi Energia.

Lectures on nuclear physics, radiation, Estonian energy options, nuclear fuels and waste, Estonian geology and possible waste disposal facilities, nuclear power plant operation, operating principles of different types of reactors, and nuclear energy study opportunities at universities in neighbouring countries were given by several lecturers and guests from abroad - Finland, Sweden, Brazil, Switzerland and Germany - in addition to Estonia's own experts. The summer school was also organised with the support of the NGO Estonian Nuclear Youth, an association of young people interested in nuclear energy.
