65% supports nuclear power plant weighing for security of supply

An opinion poll commissioned by Fermi Energia and carried out by Kantar Emor in mid-August shows that a total of 65% of the population is in favour (36%) or rather in favour (29%) of considering a new generation small nuclear power plant to ensure Estonia's security of electricity supply.

There are 11% strongly against and 10% rather against, for a total of 21%. 14% could not answer.

As in previous surveysga was also asked this time which type of electricity generation is favoured for development in Estonia in view of the reduction of electricity generation from oil shale. The preferred forms of energy continue to be all of the following carbon meta types - wind (56%), new generation nuclear (52%) and solar (50%).

The main advantages of developing a nuclear power plant in Estonia are considered to be the security of electricity supply in all weather conditions (58%) and cheaper electricity prices (51%), while the main disadvantages are the storage of nuclear waste (63%) and the risk of accidents (47%).

A significantly higher percentage of support for nuclear energy is among men (81%), while women's support has always been more modest, and this is also the case this time (54%). However, women's support is also clearly increasing in the long term.

Among age groups, the strongest supporters are both the youngest (15-34 years, 68%) and the oldest (65-84 years, 74%). As expected, taking into account previous surveys, the share of supporters of the plant is higher among respondents with higher education. While 64% of those with up to secondary education support the consideration of a nuclear power plant, 71% of those with higher education do so.

In terms of party preference, supporters of all parties are (more) in favour of considering a nuclear power plant.

Fermi Energia commissions surveys on attitudes towards nuclear energy deployment on a regular basis from 2019.
