Young nuclear enthusiasts gather at Fermion Summer School

The Fermion Summer School held at the Kiviõli Adventure Centre on 8-10 August brought 33 young people from all over Estonia interested in nuclear energy to Ida-Viru County. They talked about the history of nuclear energy, different reactor technologies, the energy footprint, the environment and safety. In addition, they tried their hand at a reactor power management simulation and did group work on different reactor technologies. The summer school came to an exciting end with a nuclear debate, the brainchild of Rakvere State Gymnasium, where young people took on different roles and debated the idea of building a nuclear power plant.

Launched in 2020, the Fermion Summer School aims to provide participants with a basic understanding of nuclear energy and show what the future of the research and industry could look like. Fermi Energia, which is planning to build a small modular reactor in Estonia, will bring together nuclear energy enthusiasts and experts to explore the opportunities and risks of nuclear energy, show how a nuclear reactor works and share real-life experiences of working in a modern nuclear power plant.
